I’ve made a conditional (on actually seeing, driving, inspecting the damn thing)  offer of $8000CDN/$6000USD for the Taco. I am obviously the office craigslist scumbag, but hey. If they can’t unload it and/or are willing to give me a discount to get rid of it.... win!

They....recently had their living situation change (think lotto) and have since replaced it. I would like it very much, but I think the odds are low.

That being said....wife approval secured! Again, this likely won’t happen, but nothing ventured, nothing gained.

I have not seen it, nor do I know anything about it other than the fact it is a base, double cab, 4x4, 5 speed with around 90,000km/55,000 miles. It is silver and has a canopy.

I also now know, it has a broken windshield and worn interior. That should seriously hamper their efforts to sell it, which would would mean advantage to COFL.

Kinja'd!!!

Obviously the Forte would have to go. Any Vancity or Canada Oppo’s know anyone who would want a reasonably priced car that rolled off the lot a few months ago?

Look for rust on the frame, look at the rear leaf spring rebound clip. There may be an open recall on the blower motor.

luckily we are in a pretty rust free area, but I will scope it out.

I liked my ‘15 and would take another Taco. I think they’re great trucks. Some V6 2012s had problem with the secondary  air pumps, that’s about the only issue I can think of my 2012s.

Clutch will be super goofy, but you’ll get used to it. Maybe.

The rust can come from the inside on the frame rails. Tacos, turdra s and sequoias have had issues with poor box welds resulting in an increased potential to rust. Tu ndras and sequoias have a recall campaign. Tacomas have one for the rear leafsprings and shackle mounts. Apparently the leaves can become seperated and puncture the gas tank but does not affect all units produced.

The 4-cylinder 4WD combo seems like it would be an absolute dog.  I’ve driven the V6 from that era with 2WD and it was just adequate.  I can’t imagine having more weight and less power would be any fun at all.  On the other hand they are simple and hold their value well.  I’d just make sure you can convince your coworker to let you take it out for a long drive to make sure you can tolerate commuting in it before making any firm offer.

That. If i uad to do it over again, i probably would have got a v6. The 2.7 is a bit gutless on the freeway. That being said, around town power is fine, but mpgs are less than i expected.

My papaw has one and it is what it is. Super reliable, kind of boring, and very well made. Overall, a perfect truck.

4WD might fix the issue with wider tires , but the ass is light. The 2WD version can get kind of sketchy in the rain.

The 2.7 is just fine on my* base RWD, but I bet with the more weight and higher ride height in the 4x4, yeah you'll get to where you need just not quickly. But it would be a work vehicle for him, and it's better than a Forte sedan LX.

When empty, I agree. Once I added a fiberglass topper and a few tools, rain hasn’t been an issue compared to a previous gen especially. It’s also useless in slush, snow, ice, sleet, and anything else that isn’t dry pavement (in RWD)

So obviously it’s a good reliable truck... but... you have to be willing to go slowish, say 75 mph is going to feel like mach 5 in a 2.7L 4cy taco... comfort is okay if you are a dwarf or are extremely flexible as the floor is very high vs the seat height. Fuel economy will probably be in the high teens or low 20's like ave around 20 mpg or so... Parts will be cheap and easy to replace...

If I was driving less than 2 00 miles a week I’d go for it, if I was driving more then I’d look for something more road worthy like a kia forte.

Zoiberg will want to buy it in 20 years.

If they will let you drive it for a week, it would be a way to see if you could live with it on a daily basis. It would be perfect for me, I don’t drive that much and could really use a little 4x4...

I can tell if I like a car in the first 10 minutes, I imagine you could do the same. I currently prefer the chevy colorado over the taco for a truck but I’ll never buy either since they cost money and I don’t have any.

Interesting.

2.7 is the evolution of the 22r- no one pays it any attention, and it just keeps going. It isn’t fast but it does alright.

Is it single cab? Are you thinking this might turn into an off-roader?

Crawl under and look at the inside of the frame under the passenger- it is right beside the catylitic converter and this is where the frame is going to fail. There are a few bolt holes there but there shouldn’t be any big holes;

If it's all good mechanically/frame wise with a 6/10 interior, what would be a fair price for it?  It seems that there are not many to compare to on autotrader or Craigslist

Age and Tacoma-ness say $8-10k - 2.7 means less, but 4x4 means more..

Nothing ventured nothing gained man. They a) came into a ton of money suddenly , b) have replaced it, c) have no room for it, d) can’t be bothered to put in the effort.

It also has windshield damage and seat stains.

If I get it, that’s exactly the expression I’ll make to the sellers as I drive away.

“I am obviously the office craigslist scumbag”

No you’re not! I don’t know why people get so offended by “lowball” offers. You never know how motivated a buyer or a seller is. As a seller I will respond to even the lowest offer with a “no thanks, but I will let you know if anything changes.” That person may come back offering more, or I may decided that I just want XYZ thing/vehicle gone and will take what I can get.

As a buyer, you have to come in low.

I like my 2018 Taco, I’m not in love with it but it does what it’s supposed to do.

My buddy is caught up on a claim with Toyota re. his Sequoia, what a mess

Appears from this article that all undercarriage components are reused on the replacement Toyota frames, and that Toyota just replaces the raw frame as a single component between all the others above, below, around, and throughout.

Your thoughts?

Toyota frame rust settlement could cost the company $3.4 billion

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

As many as 225,000 steel frames under Toyota Tacoma and Tundra pickups and Sequoia SUVs may need to be replaced,...
